2.5 Putting your PFD on in the water


In the Water

Know the procedure for getting into your lifejacket if you are already in the water.

  • Spread the lifejacket or PFD open with the inside facing up, out of the water
  • Position the jacket so the neck opening is closest to you
  • Lift your arms over your head, moving the lifejacket from a position in front of you, to behind you
  • Position the lifejacket on your back and around your body
  • Roll over onto your back to fasten the jacket

Mandatory Equipment

Pleasure Craft - Over 6M but not over 8M in length

  1. One Canadian-approved personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board
  2. One buoyant heaving line of not less than 15m in length or one approved lifebuoy with an outside diameter of 610 mm or 762 mm that is attached to a buoyant line of not less than 15m in length
  3. A reboarding device if the freeboard of the vessel is greater than 0.5m
  4. One manual propelling device or, an anchor with not less than 15m of cable, rope or chain in any combination
  5. One bailer or manual water pump fitted with, or accompanied by, sufficient hose to enable a person using the pump to pump water from the bilge of the vessel over the side of the vessel
  6. One Class 5BC fire extinguisher, if the pleasure craft is a power driven vessel, plus another Class 5BC fire extinguisher if the pleasure craft is equipped with a fuel burning cooking, heating or refrigerating appliance
  7. A watertight flashlight
  8. 6 Canadian-approved flares of Type A,B or C. Note: 8 is not mandatory if the vessel is operating in a river, canal or lake in which it can at no time be more than one mile from shore, or, if it is engaged in an official competition or in final preparation for an official competition and has no sleeping arrangements
  9. A sound signalling device or a sound signalling appliance
  10. Navigation lights that meet applicable standards set out in the Collision Regulations if the pleasure craft is operated after sunset, before sunrise or in periods of restricted visibility

Pleasure Craft - Over 8M but not over 12M in length

  1. One Canadian-approved personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board
  2. One buoyant heaving line of not less than 15m in length
  3. One approved lifebuoy with an outside diameter of 610 mm or 762 mm that is attached to a buoyant line of not less than 15m in length
  4. A reboarding device if the freeboard of the vessel is greater than 0.5m
  5. An anchor with not less than 30m of cable, rope or chain in any combination
  6. One bailer
  7. One manual water pump fitted with, or accompanied by, sufficient hose to enable a person using the pump to pump water from the bilge of the vessel over the side of the vessel
  8. One Class 10BC fire extinguisher, if the pleasure craft is a power driven vessel, plus another Class 10BC fire extinguisher if the pleasure craft is equipped with a fuel burning cooking, heating or refrigerating appliance
  9. A watertight flashlight
  10. 12 Canadian-approved flares of Type A,B,C or D of which not more than 6 are Type D. Note: 10 is not mandatory if the vessel is operating in a river, canal or lake in which it can at no time be more than one mile from shore, or, if it is engaged in an official competition or in final preparation for an official competition and has no sleeping arrangements
  11. A sound signalling device or a sound signalling appliance
  12. Navigation lights that meet applicable standards set out in the Collision Regulations
